HUTCH Magazine NOW Accepting Submissions

What Is HUTCH?

HUTCH is a kids’ literary and creativity magazine, published semi-annually under the direction of Peter H. Reynolds, with the help of The Blue Bunny Bookstore, and his non-profit foundation, The Reynolds Center for Teaching, Learning, and Creativity.

The magazine is seeking student submissions. Submission details can be found, here. Deadline is Oct. 15.

The magazine features stories, art, poetry, book reviews, travel logs and interviews submitted by students. The first issue of HUTCH was published in June of 2008.

Each Spring and Fall, The Blue Bunny invites children ages 5-12 to submit art, poetry, stories, book reviews, photos and other journalistic pieces for consideration.  Each issue starts with a central theme, and all submissions are requested to be focused toward positive values.

The magazine is produced with help from a volunteer editing staff and The Reynolds Center, where the layout and design is enhanced with original illustrations and art direction by Peter H. Reynolds. The 40-page magazine is published in a high-gloss professionally-printed format, and is also available as a online download.

Every new issue is welcomed with a publication party at The Blue Bunny Bookstore, where all of the children who have contributed can celebrate with their families.  Every child whose submission is accepted receives an invitation to the party, along with a free copy of the magazine and a certificate.  Peter always addresses the group of children with a encouraging speech and a crowd-pleasing countdown as he opens the box of freshly printed magazines.  After the magazines are distributed, a group photo in front of the Blue Bunny Bookstore has been a tradition.

All children in grades K-6 are invited to submit their creative work for consideration for publication.  Printed copies of the magazine may be ordered online or through The Blue Bunny Bookstore by calling the store directly at 781-493-6568.  Printed copies may also be purchased in store at 577 High St, in Dedham, MA.

HUTCH Mission:

HUTCH magazine provides a validating forum for young learners to share their ideas and focus on positive values. HUTCH is an accessible resource for child educators wishing to encourage meaningful learning through the unique experience of being published.

How to Submit:

If you have interest in having kids published in an actual magazine (for kids) this is your chance! Email nrothmarsh@yahoo.com if you're interested

Next Issue (19):

The suggested theme for the next issue is: "I Was Brave, I Am Brave, I Will Be Brave!"
The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15, 2017

Issue 19 will be released in December.

Peter H. Reynolds and The Dot Rolls Into Dorchester on Sept. 15

On Friday, Sept. 15, millions of people in 169 countries will celebrate International Dot Day, and among them will be students and faculty members at William E. Russell Elementary School in Dorchester, Massachusetts — a historic neighborhood of Boston known locally as “Dot.”

Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’s acclaimed picture book The Dot, in 2009 Iowa educator Terry Shay and his students decided to celebrate creativity and courage on Sept. 15. The Dot is the heartwarming story of a perceptive and caring teacher and a reluctant student who thinks she can’t draw. Vashti’s teacher encourages her to trust in her own abilities and be brave enough to “just make a mark and see where it takes you.”

Exploring the themes of creativity, bravery, and self-expression, The Dot has been translated into many languages, including Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, French, Spanish, and even braille. Since International Dot Day’s founding, over 9.5 million educators, schoolchildren, celebrities, and everyday readers have spread Reynolds’s message by creating their own dots and sharing them via Pinterest, Twitter, and classroom walls, among other outlets.

This year, Reynolds himself will celebrate Dot Day at Russell Elementary School with 375 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

“Picture books can change lives, and The Dot is doing it around the world with children and adults who are being encouraged to make their mark. We’re proud to be able to take care of these awesome students right here in our own backyard,” said Karen Lotz, president of Candlewick Press, the publisher of The Dot.

Reynolds is expected to be joined by Boston Public Schools Superintendent of Schools, Tommy Chang. The guests will tour the school and enjoy presentations of the students’ work.

"We are very grateful for the gift of literacy, which Peter is providing to our students," said Russell Elementary Principal Tamara Blake-Canty. "We are incredibly proud of the rigorous academic scholarship we pursue at the Russell, and celebrating International Dot Day here not only gives us another occasion to highlight our students’ pursuits, it also fuels our teachers’ and students’ ingenuity to reach further heights."

Reynolds says he is especially pleased to be sharing his message in Dorchester, Boston’s largest neighborhood, often locally referred to as “Dot.”

“I like to choose a significant physical location to celebrate Dot Day each year,” Reynolds explains. “Besides, its an awesome nickname. Dorchester is just minutes from my educational media studio based in Boston’s Innovation District, where I hope Russell Elementary School students will one day be using their creativity to make their mark as innovators in tomorrow’s workforce.”

Sydney & Simon Blast Off in Their Latest Adventure: To The Moon!

They’ve used STEAM-thinking to save Greenie, revive flowers for the art show, and now Sydney & Simon are embarking on their next adventure that is truly out of this world.

In To The Moon, the twin mice flex their creative and collaborative muscles to create a STEAM-inspired project about the Earth’s Moon, all for a chance to meet astronaut Kris Kornfield!

To The Moon is the third installment in the STEAM-powered Sydney & Simon series, which includes Full Steam Ahead and Go Green, written by real-life twins Peter H. and Paul Reynolds. To The Moon is available now from Peter H. Reynolds’ own book store, The Blue Bunny Books & Toys.

To celebrate the book’s release, we put on our own STEAM-powered hats to develop a few activities for our paper prototyping and fabrication tool, Fab@School Maker Studio:

Inspired by Simon’s moon-matching game, you can test your skills with the Fab@School Maker Studio 2D Moon Phase Puzzle. Try adding an extra challenge by filling in each Moon phase name yourself!

Join Kris Kornfeild on her mission and blast off with an animated Rocket Launch pop-up that slides up and down!

Or cruise through space with the Rocket Flight Path pop-up. Try making new tracks for the rocket to trace for an extra creative challenge!

Finally, test your FAB skills with the 3D Rocket Ship. Can you change the shape or size of the design? Can you put yourself and Commander Kris Kornfield inside the rocket?

The FableVision Learning team is excited to see what your students are fabricating, animating, and writing! Share your Moon-inspired Fab@School Maker Studio creations by emailing Patrick@FableVisionLearning.com. You may even get the chance to be featured in a future blog post!

But wait! Did you know that our Moon is going to pass directly between the Earth and the Sun on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017? This solar eclipse is a very rare event, and a great opportunity to use STEAM to learn and teach others about our position in the solar system. Check out NASA’s Solar Eclipse resource here.

A Message from Peter H. Reynolds: He answers questions from Global Read Aloud friends!

Peter H. ReynoldsWow. I have been flooded with e-mails, tweets, direct messages and "snail mail" these past few weeks from my Global Read Aloud friends from around the world. I love seeing all this energy around books — and very honored that I was chosen to be the focus of the Author Study this year. I wish I could respond to each and every message and give feedback on every student blog post, but there are only so many hours in a day and I am busy, busy, busy on several new books. I decided to pull a few questions from the pile and answer them here as they mirror many of those that came in.

Kay Hetzer, a first grade teacher from the Miami Valley School in Dayton, Ohio sent me a question from her classroom:

"Were you like the boy in your book "I'm Here?"

Great question. My inspiration for the boy is a boy named Matthew, but I can relate to the I'm Here boy. My twin brother, Paul and I were a bit quiet and shy growing up. Hard to believe now with me speaking on stage to thousands of educators and Paul teaching at Boston College and also speaking to crowds fearlessly. By the way, Matt is now grown up, loves to bake and has started his own biscotti baking company. http://www.autismspeaks.org/blog/2014/03/04/biscotti-brings-smiles-customers-young-baker-autism

Mason, a five year old from Canada asked, "Did you like making books when you five?"

Well, I think at five I was drawing a lot and probably learning to write. It was in first grade when my brother, Paul and I created a newspaper. This really sparked the idea of publishing, sharing our ideas and creativity with the world. I wish someone had given me a blank book and challenged me to use my art and words to tell a story at age five. I think the earlier you start the better. It's like learning a language.

I'll sign off for now and get back to the pile of books I am creating, but I wanted to say a BIG thank you to Pernille Ripp and the Global Read Aloud team for helping "Connect the dots" with so many creative teachers and students. I treasure all the tweets, posts, letters, art, and photos. Inspiration for my own creative journey.
