FableVision Learning is excited to connect the dots at the National Conference on Student Activities on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Westin Boston Seaport Hotel. Following the opening Keynote by Peter H. Reynolds - keep an eye on the schedule for workshops run by FableVision Learning. The two sessions include:
Start with a Story – 10:00AM-10:45 AM
Designed for informal/after-school learning settings, FableVision Learning’s Start with a Story program debuted with the YMCA. The program ties the works of New York Times best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds to hands-on and technology-based activities/projects.
K-5 students discover, through a single book, elements of SEL, STEM, journaling, digital storytelling and engineering.
Start with a Story is set up for volunteers or staff to deliver with ease, with carefully crafted, out-of-the-box components. The current program includes projects for: Going Places, Word Collector, Say Something, Our Table, I am Peace, Be You!, The North Star, The Dot, Ish, and Sky Color. During this session, attendees will get hands on with one of the Start with a Story projects and the accompanying animation tool, Animation-ish.
The North Star Classroom – 4:20PM-5:05PM
The essential outcome of education is for students to know who they are and what they can give to the world. The classroom is where students should get to explore their strengths, learn resilience, and discover their power to create. Designed for all learning spaces, FableVision Learning’s The North Star Classroom is a guide to creating the kind of classroom where students can do that. Based on best-selling author Peter H. Reynolds’s book The North Star, the flexible program includes best practices for setting up a learning space and establishing a positive, creative climate as well as 18+ weeks of activities and projects that help students develop their interests, strengths, values, and goals that will start laying the path to the future selves they want to be. Activities include teamwork challenges, problem solving projects, social-emotional games and experiences, literature exploration and discussions, and personal reflection writing pieces. During this session, attendees will hear how schools and programs (including the YMCA) have used elements of The North Star Classroom to inspire student growth and voice.
